Platelet donation

Did you know that at some Héma-Québec donation centers, you can donate not only blood and plasma, but also platelets? It is the case at the Kirkland, Versailles, Laval, St-Bruno and Brossard donation centers in the greater Montreal area, and at Ste-Foy and Lebourgneuf in Québec City.

Platelets are present in the blood and facilitate coagulation, helping to seal off blood vessels in the event of injury, to prevent excessive blood loss. But when are platelet transfusions needed? How does platelet donation work, and can everyone donate them?
