Cord blood
Since 2004, Héma-Québec has been managing the Public Cord Blood Bank. Its objective is to create a diversified collective resource of hematopoietic stem cells to meet the needs of people waiting for transplants in Québec and elsewhere in the world. These cells, derived from umbilical cord blood, can be used to treat over 80 serious diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma and severe anemia.

NetCord-FACT Accreditation
Héma-Québec’s Public Cord Blood Bank is the first Canadian bank to be NetCord-FACT accredited. In cell therapy, this accreditation is an essential qualification. The standards in this international standard are established by recognized experts, based on the most recent knowledge involving cord blood banks, which puts Héma-Québec among the leaders in the field.
Héma-Québec contributes to the recruiting of donors, particularly through digital advertising and action in the field. It is also responsible for registering and qualifying donors, while the collecting itself is done by partner hospitals. Upon receiving the collections, Héma-Québec takes care of the qualification, the processing, analyses, cryopreservation and distribution of the cord blood units.
