Communicating with loved ones
Your role as a health care professional is to broach the subject of human tissue donation. This approach is essential. There is no perfect way to broach this subject; the important thing is to talk about it with sensitivity and compassion. Our resources will help you better understand the different steps to follow with the loved ones.
Referral procedures
Once you have recommended a potential donor to Héma-Québec, a member of our team will let you know if consent is recorded in the registries of the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and the Chambre des notaires du Québec (CNQ).
Recommendation channels:
Presence of consent
Inform the loved ones that consent is on file or that the health insurance card is signed. Let them know that a member of the Héma-Québec team will call them in the next few hours to answer their questions. Obtain the name and phone numbers of the person to contact.Absence of consent
Present the option of tissue donation to the next of kin and ask them if Héma-Québec can call them to discuss the donation option and answer their questions.Record refusal in the CNQ’s registry
End of process.
It is important to verify whether the potential donor agrees to have a recommendation sent to Héma-Québec.
If the potential donor agrees
Inform the patient that Héma-Québec will call them within 7 days prior to the planned MAID date to provide the usual explanations, record their consent, and complete a medical and social questionnaire. If the potential donor refuses
End of the process.
Offering the option of human tissue donation: steps for a successful approach
When talking to the loved ones, make sure they have received and understood all the information provided by the medical team regarding the death. It is important to choose the right time, the right person, and the right way. Conversations about potentially donating human tissue must be handled with care. This is a delicate discussion, and it is essential to speak with sensitivity. The goal is simply to open the conversation. Give loved ones the Guide for Families and Loved Ones, which can help them in their decision-making process.
A valuable collaboration on the field
Every tissue donation is made possible first and foremost by the person who consented to it. However, these donations could not take place without the collaboration of health care network staff.
Through both the identification and recommendation of potential donors, you play a crucial role by being Héma-Québec’s eyes on the ground.
