Donor Screening Service 

Héma-Québec’s Product Qualification Laboratory, located in Montréal, performs a full range of specialized tests to ensure the safety and quality of biological products intended for recipients of blood products, breast milk, stem cells, tissues, and organs. 


This laboratory also provides screening services to various healthcare facilities and organizations for screening (non-diagnostic) purposes, including in accordance with Health Canada’s requirements under the Safety of Human Cells, Tissues and Organs for Transplantation (CTO) Regulations

The tests offered are:

  • Virological screening using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) 
    • West Nile virus (WNV) 
    • Human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV) 
    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) 
    • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) 
  • Serological screening for infectious microorganisms: 
    • Syphilis
    • Cytomegalovirus (Total anti-CMV) 
    • Human T-lymphotropic virus type I/II (Anti-HTLV) 
    • Hepatitis B virus (Anti-HBc, HBsAg) 
    • Hepatitis C virus (Anti-HCV) 
    • Human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV) 
    • Chagas disease
  • Screening for red blood cell antibodies
