Working together to save lives
You can support blood donors at our blood drives across Quebec, recruit potential stem cell donors at community events, or even take part in workshops where people learn about their blood type. If you're good at public speaking, your role could be to encourage others to donate.

Many volunteers help our staff at blood drives and donation centers.
No experience is needed to volunteer with us. We’ll give you all the training you need for your role. .
Ideal profile
To volunteer at a blood drive or donor centre, you must:
- Have good interpersonal and communication skills
- Be a good listener
- Be a good team player
- Have a warm, welcoming, cheerful personality
- Be able to stand for long periods of time
Duties
Volunteers’ duties vary from one location to the next.
Blood drive support volunteer
Support volunteers are assigned a task for the blood drive they are volunteering at. Some examples include:- Greeting donors Checking the appointment chart Asking for ID Asking donors to read a pamphlet, scan their wristband, sit down, etc. Accompanying donors from the donor bed to the rest area Applying bandages and monitoring donors Serving snacks Thanking donors on their way out and encouraging them to come back again
Blood drive volunteer – Group leader
Group leaders are volunteers who lead the “support volunteers” at blood donor clinics. They are in charge of recruiting the right number of volunteers for the positions at each blood drive section. Héma-Québec provides each group leader with a list of volunteers so they can replace those who cannot attend the event. Some leaders can participate in up to three drives a week.Donor center support volunteer
Donor centre support volunteers can be assigned a variety of tasks that will vary from one centre to the next. Some examples include:- Greeting donors
- Checking the appointment chart
- Informing Héma-Québec staff when donors arrive for their appointment
- Serving coffee
- Refilling snacks
- Cleaning tables
- Taking coats and distributing tokens
Schedule
Blood drives
Blood drives take place from Monday to Friday and usually last six to seven hours, so we are looking for volunteers who are available on weekdays during the day. .Donor centers
Donor centers are open seven days a week and five evenings a week, so we need volunteers for mornings, afternoons and evenings. .

To become a volunteer at a blood drive or donation center, you must register by filling out our form.
Recruitment volunteers are represented by the Association of Blood Donation Volunteers (ABDV), whose primary mission is to support Héma-Québec in recruiting donors and promoting the donation of biological products of human origin. Since September 1998, nearly 1,000 devoted volunteers are represented by ABDV each year. ABDV’s 13 regional chapters and its youth chapter extend the association’s reach throughout Québec. Volunteers are needed all year round and for different types of information booths.
Ideal profile
To become a recruitment volunteer, you must:
- Be available for a few hours each month
- Be comfortable dealing with the public and have good interpersonal skills
- Be able to explain the different types of donations (training provided)
Duties
Blood donation promotion volunteers
These volunteers promote blood, plasma and stem cell donation by working information booths at blood drives and at CEGEPs, universities, businesses, etc. They raise awareness about the different types of donations by providing interested people with information and helping them book appointments.Youth chapter ambassadors
Ambassadors of the ABDV’s youth chapter take part in a variety of projects (online and in person) to recruit blood, plasma and stem cell donors at their schools and workplaces. These volunteers must fit the ideal profile described above andbe between the ages of 18 and 35..

The schedule varies with the requirements of the activities (daytime, evenings, weekends).

Talking to the people around you about the gift of life is an excellent way to support the cause.
- Raise awareness in your own community. Encourage them to give blood, plasma, platelets, stem cells, cord blood and mother’s milk and to consider giving consent to become a human tissue donor.
