Clémentine, stem cell donor

A single stem cell donation can be a life changing experience. Discover the touching story of Sofia, a 7-year-old girl who fell seriously ill, and Clémentine, the donor who saved her life.

Misfortune often strikes without warning. For young Sofia and her parents, life was going along normally until the little seven-year old girl’s condition suddenly deteriorated and bruises appeared all over her body. Following her emergency hospitalization, the verdict came quickly: Sofia had a severe form of bone marrow suppression, a rare blood cell disease that affects mainly young people. The situation was critical because she no longer had platelets or white blood cells, and her red blood cell level was extremely low.

Then began a real race against time to save her life.

Sofia went into the hospital in early October 2019 and began a series of treatments. After several weeks, there was no progress. In early December, her immune system, which was reduced to almost nothing, received another shock: an infection set in. Sofia urgently needed surgery to remove a mass from her lungs. The risks from the surgery were significant, but everything went well. However, the countdown sped up. Realizing that the treatments were ineffective, the doctors concluded that a bone marrow transplant was the only possible option. They first considered her five-year-old brother, although still very young for such an operation, but the tests showed that he was not a compatible donor.

The last resort was Héma-Québec’s Stem Cell Donor Registry. It contains the DNA profiles of all people in Québec who are registered because they were willing to donate to a compatible patient. Among them was Clémentine Beucher. The tide was finally turning for Sofia: Clementine was compatible and was willing to donate quickly. Sofia’s story finally had a happy ending!

The stem cell transplant took place on December 27, 2019, and proved successful. Sofia’s life was saved, and she recovered with a minimum of aftereffects, thanks to the generosity of someone whom she and her parents, Louis-Philippe and Véronique, knew nothing about at that time. Because the donation was completely anonymous, Clementine herself didn’t know who benefited from her selfless act.

Although the donating itself is fairly easy to do,” Clementine says, “it’s a process that should not be taken lightly. It’s very emotional, but it’s really worth it.

An emotional meeting

Although the process is anonymous, both the donor and the recipient have the option of indicating their willingness to be identified after a certain time. In the case of Sofia and Clementine, since both parties had indicated their openness to lifting the anonymity, a meeting was arranged. Filmed live, that first meeting was emotionally charged on both sides. This short video conveys the generosity and courage that were needed to overcome the disease and save Sofia.

Today, Sofia is 11 years old and can live a normal life. Relieved at the end of that difficult ordeal, Louis-Philippe, Véronique, and Sofia now get together every year with Clémentine, on December 27, to celebrate the anniversary of that miraculous transplant.
