Before registering, it is important to understand the following points:

  • Registration is only intended for individuals who have never registered before.
  • The cheek swab you will perform allows for the analysis of your genetic profile to determine your compatibility with a patient.
  • Your registration is not aimed at helping a specific person, but rather at giving a chance to any patient in need, here or elsewhere in the world.
  • It is possible that you may never be contacted, or only after several years. You will remain listed as a potential donor until the age of 60.

If you're a match for a patient, you will need to:

1. Provide blood samples in preparation for donating

These samples will be used for compatibility testing to confirm your compatibility with the recipient and for screening tests for blood-borne infectious diseases.

2. Fill out an eligibility questionnaire.

While there is no guarantee that you will be chosen, once you have been selected for typing confirmation, you must always be ready to donate.

3. Prepare yourself to donate

You will have to go to the hospital two or three weeks before donating to meet with the doctor who will collect your donation, provide a medical history, and undergo any other medical tests needed. There are two possible types of stem cell donation. The transplant recipient’s doctor will recommend the best donation method for your situation.
